Prior to today's game against the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox left-handed pitcher David Price was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and activated from the 10-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman was optioned to Pawtucket following yesterday's game against the Seattle Mariners.
 
Price is scheduled to start today's game against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET.

Price, who began the season on the disabled list with a left elbow strain, made two rehab starts with Pawtucket, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in 5.2 innings. In his debut season with Boston in 2016, Price led the majors in starts (35) and innings pitched (230.0), going 17-9 with a 3.99 ERA (102 ER). The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner and five-time All-Star also set a single-season Red Sox record for most strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher (228), becoming the club's first pitcher to lead the majors in innings since Roger Clemens did so in 1991. Selected first overall by Tampa Bay in the 2007 June Draft, the 31-year-old is 121-65 (.651) with a 3.21 ERA (597 ER/1,671.2 IP) in 253 major league appearances (248 starts) between the Rays (2008-14), Detroit Tigers (2014-15), Toronto Blue Jays (2015), and Red Sox (2016).
 
Workman, 28, has appeared in one game with Boston this season, pitching three scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles on May 4, his first big league appearance since 2014. In eight games with the PawSox this season, the right-hander has posted a 1.98 ERA (3 ER/13.2 IP) and held opponents to a .149 batting average (7-for-47). Selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2010 June Draft, the 2013 World Series champion has 41 games of regular season major league experience (18 starts), going 7-13 with a 4.99 ERA (73 ER/131.2 IP) and 119 strikeouts. He spent the 2016 season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on June 15, 2015.
