Red Sox and shortstop Xander Bogaerts agree on six-year contract extension

April 1st, 2019

The Boston Red Sox today signed shortstop Xander Bogaerts to a six-year contract extension that spans the 2020-2025 seasons, with a vesting option for the 2026 season.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Bogaerts, 26, has appeared in 763 games over seven Major League seasons (2013-19) since being signed by Boston as an international free agent in 2009. He has hit .283 (835-for-2,947) with 75 home runs, 177 doubles, 14 triples, and 387 RBIs, and from 2015-18 he led all Major League shortstops in hits (692), RBIs (335), and doubles (146). A two-time Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award winner and 2016 All-Star, Bogaerts made his Major League debut at 20 years old in 2013 and is the only player that was on the Red Sox active World Series roster in both 2013 and 2018. He has started each of Boston’s last 29 Postseason games, dating back to 2013.

In 2018, Bogaerts finished 13th in BBWAA American League Most Valuable Player voting after batting .288 (148-for-513) and setting career highs in home runs (23), RBIs (103), doubles (45), extra-base hits (71), on-base percentage (.360), slugging percentage (.522), and OPS (.883). He was one of 16 players to record at least 100 RBIs in 2018, and one of just four players among that group to also hit at least 40 doubles. Bogaerts joined Nomar Garciaparra (1997, 1999-2000, 2002) as the only Red Sox shortstops to record at least 20 home runs and 40 doubles in a season.

The 2019 season opener marked the sixth consecutive Opening Day start at shortstop for Bogaerts, the longest streak by a Red Sox player at the position since Rick Burleson’s six-year stretch from 1975-80. The 26-year-old started at shortstop in 587 of the Red Sox’ 648 games (90.9%) from 2015 to 2018, the second-most starts at the position in the Majors during that time. Voted the AL’s starting shortstop for the 2016 All-Star Game by the fan ballot, Bogaerts was honored as the 2015 Red Sox MVP by the Boston Baseball Writers and won their Jackie Jensen Hustle Award for spirit and determination in both 2016 and 2017.

A native of Oranjestad, Aruba, Bogaerts is one of only five Aruban-born players in Major League Baseball history, and the only one to play for the Red Sox.
