Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA - Prior to tonight's game against the Washington Nationals, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

Cuevas, 27, has made 15 starts for Pawtucket this season, going 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA (35 ER/86.1 IP), 67 strikeouts, and 25 walks. In his last seven starts, the right-hander has posted a 2.62 ERA (13 ER/44.2 IP), most recently giving up three runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings on Wednesday at Buffalo. Signed by Boston as an international free agent in 2008, Cuevas made three relief appearances with the Red sox in 2016 and one with the Detroit Tigers in 2017. The Venezuelan native has appeared in 201 minor league games (129 starts) in the Red Sox (2009-16, '18), Tigers (2017), and Marlins (2017) organizations, going 53-54 with a 3.78 ERA (386 ER/918.2 IP).
Smith, 28, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on May 15 with a right shoulder subluxation. On June 13, he underwent successful right shoulder surgery, performed by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. Smith went 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA (6 ER/14.1 IP) and 18 strikeouts in 18 appearances for the Red Sox this season. Acquired by Boston from Seattle on December 7, 2015, the Texas native has appeared in 108 major league games between the Mariners (2014-15) and Red Sox (2016-18), posting a 2.21 ERA (25 ER/102.0 IP), a .199 opponent batting average, 129 strikeouts, and only four home runs allowed.
Haley, 27, has appeared in four games over two stints with the Red Sox this season, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 7.2 innings. In 2.2 innings at Yankee Stadium last night, he gave up one run on four hits with two walks. The right-hander has a 3.06 ERA (21 ER/61.2 IP) and 54 strikeouts in 12 starts for Pawtucket this season, including a 2.38 ERA (11 ER/41.2 IP) over his last eight minor league outings. Selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2012 June Draft, he has made 14 career major league relief appearances between Minnesota (2017) and Boston (2018), posting a 5.61 ERA (16 ER/25.2 IP) with 14 strikeouts.
