The Boston Red Sox and Portland Sea Dogs today announced the extension of their Player Development Contract (PDC) for an additional two years. The extension keeps the Red Sox's Double-A Eastern League affiliate in Portland through the 2020 season.
Red Sox Vice President of Player Development Ben Crockett and Sea Dogs Chairman Bill Burke made the announcement.
The Red Sox and Sea Dogs, whose partnership began in 2003, will celebrate their 15th season of affiliation in 2017. Over that time, the Sea Dogs have advanced to the Eastern League playoffs on five occasions, including their first Eastern League Championship season in 2006. The affiliate plays its home games at Portland's Hadlock Field, which features a likeness of Fenway Park's Green Monster and skyboxes named for Red Sox legends.
There are currently 21 Sea Dogs alumni on the Red Sox 40-man roster, including Andrew Benintendi (2016), Mookie Betts (2014-15), Xander Bogaerts (2012-13), Jackie Bradley Jr. (2012), and Sea Dogs Hall of Famers Dustin Pedroia (2005) and Hanley Ramirez (2004-05). During its nine-year affiliation with the Florida Marlins prior to agreeing with Boston, the team also featured Sea Dogs Hall of Famers Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Kotsay, Kevin Millar, and Edgar Renteria, who all went on to play for the Red Sox.
Portland is one of Boston's six domestic minor league affiliates, joining Triple-A Pawtucket (International League), High-A Salem (Carolina League), Single-A Greenville (South Atlantic League), Short-A Lowell (New York-Penn League) and the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox (Gulf Coast League).
