Red Sox place David Price on injured list

May 6th, 2019

Prior to tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox placed left-handed pitcher David Price on the 10-day injured list with left elbow tendinitis, retroactive to May 3. To fill Price’s spot, the club selected right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Weber will wear number 65. The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 40.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Price, 33, has gone 1-2 with a 3.75 ERA (15 ER/36.0 IP) in six starts for the Red Sox this season. He has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last four outings, posting a 2.63 ERA (7 ER/24.0 IP) in that time. In 305 career regular season appearances (295 starts), the left-hander is 144-77 (.652) with a 3.26 ERA (710 ER/1,958.1 IP) and 1,895 strikeouts. Price signed with Boston as a free agent in December 2015 and has since pitched in 96 games (88 starts) including the Postseason, going 43-23 (.652) with a 3.75 ERA (230 ER/552.2 IP).

Weber, 28, is in his 11th professional season since being selected by the Braves in the 2009 June Draft. Acquired by Boston as a minor league free agent in December 2018, the right-hander has made 24 major league appearances (eight starts) with the Braves (2015-16), Mariners (2017), and Rays (2018), going 1-5 with a 5.01 ERA (41 ER/73.2 IP) and an average of only 1.59 walks per 9.0 innings. He is 1-1 with a 5.04 ERA (14 ER/25.0 IP) in five starts with the PawSox this season, most recently pitching on May 2 at Buffalo.
