Red Sox recall left-handed pitcher Brian Johnson from Triple-A Pawtucket

Prior to today's game against the Seattle Mariners, the Boston Red Sox recalled left-handed pitcher BrianJohnson from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 25-man roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Ben Taylor to Pawtucket following last night's game. Johnson is scheduled to start today's game at Fenway Park beginning at 4:05 p.m.

Johnson, 26, has made one start with Boston this season, earning his first career major league win on April 18 at Toronto after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. He has also made seven starts for the PawSox in 2017, going 2-0 with a 2.82 ERA (14 ER/44.2 IP). Selected by the Red Sox as a supplemental-round selection (31st overall) in the 2012 June Draft, Johnson is 31-22 with a 2.62 ERA (137 ER/470.0 IP) and 421 strikeouts in 92 career minor league starts, earning Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors in 2014.
Taylor, 24, made his first Opening Day roster with Boston in 2017 despite having never pitched above the Double-A level prior to the season. In 11 appearances over three stints with the Red Sox, the right-hander has posted a 6.59 ERA (10 ER/13.2 IP) with 14 strikeouts and nine walks. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Taylor is the only Red Sox pitcher in the expansion era to strike out each of his first three batters faced in the majors. Selected by Boston in the seventh round of the 2015 June Draft, Taylor has made two appearances with the PawSox this season, allowing two runs on one hit in 2.1 innings.
