Red Sox roster moves

BOSTON, MA –- Prior to tonight’s game against the Chicago White Sox, the Boston Red Sox announced the following roster moves:

• Right-handed pitcher Steven Wright was reinstated from the restricted list.

• To make room for Wright on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to the 60-day injured list.

• To make room for Wright on the 25-man roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Josh Smith to Triple-A Pawtucket following last night’s game.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Wright, 34, received an 80-game suspension from Major League Baseball on March 6. In five rehab appearances (one start) with Triple-A Pawtucket, he went 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA (2 ER/9.2 IP) and a .176 opponent batting average. He most recently pitched on June 22 against Indianapolis and threw 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit allowed. Wright appeared in 20 games (four starts) for Boston in 2018 and posted a 2.68 ERA (16 ER/53.2 IP), recording a 24.2-inning scoreless streak from May 24-June 16. Acquired from Cleveland on July 31, 2012, the 2016 American League All-Star is in his 13th professional season.

Eovaldi, 29, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a loose body in the right elbow on April 20, retroactive to April 18. He underwent successful right elbow arthroscopy and loose body removal at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on April 23, with Dr. Christopher Ahmad performing the procedure. Eovaldi is 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA (14 ER/21.0 IP) in four starts this season, with the Red Sox going 3-1 in his outings. Acquired by Boston on July 25, 2018, he has made 160 major league appearances (152 starts) for the Dodgers (2011-12), Marlins (2012-14), Yankees (2015-16), Rays (2018), and Red Sox (2018-19).

Smith, 31, has made 10 appearances (two starts) over four stints with Boston this season, going 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA (11 ER/18.1 IP). The right-hander picked up his first major league save on June 13 against Texas and most recently pitched on Sunday against the Blue Jays, allowing only one run in 3.0 innings. He has also made six starts for Pawtucket in 2019, going 2-2 with a 5.23 ERA (18 ER/31.0 IP). In 75 career appearances (11 starts) for Cincinnati (2015-16), Oakland (2017), and Boston (2019), Smith is 5-10 with one save and a 5.31 ERA (86 ER/145.2 IP).
