The Boston Red Sox selected shortstop Marcelo Mayer out of Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, CA, with their first-round pick (fourth overall) in the 2021 MLB Draft.
Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Paul Toboni made the announcement.
Mayer, 18, was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 1 prospect available in this year’s draft, as well as the No. 2 prospect by Baseball America. The left-handed hitter was named to the Baseball America High School All-America First Team after batting .392 (38-for-97) with 14 home runs and 45 RBI in 34 games for Eastlake High School (CA) this season. In four varsity seasons, the native of Chula Vista, CA, hit .363 (53-for-146) with 17 home runs and 58 RBI. Mayer was a member of USA Baseball’s 2019 17U National Team Development Program and played in the 2020 Perfect Game All-American Classic at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, OK. Prior to being selected in this year’s draft, Mayer had committed to play baseball at the University of Southern California.
