Red Sox select three players in Rule 5 Draft

December 10th, 2020

The Boston Red Sox today selected right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock from the New York Yankees’ Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre roster in the major league phase of the Rule 5 Draft. The club’s 40-man roster is now at 39.

In addition, the Red Sox selected first baseman Tyreque Reed from the Texas Rangers’ Double-A Frisco roster, as well as right-handed pitcher Kaleb Ort from the Yankees’ Double-A Trenton roster, in the Triple-A phase of the draft.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Whitlock, 24, is 12-8 with a 2.41 ERA (55 ER/205.1 IP) in 42 career minor league appearances, including 38 starts. Selected by the Yankees in the 18th round of the 2017 June Draft, the right-hander has reached as high as the Double-A level, most recently in 2019 when he spent the entire season with Trenton and posted a 3.07 ERA (24 ER/70.1 IP) in 14 starts. Ranked by Baseball America as the Yankees’ No. 15 prospect in 2019, he missed the second half of that season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in July. Born in Snellville, GA, Whitlock attended the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he pitched from 2016-17.
