RHP Ruben Alaniz Claimed Off Waivers by Cincinnati

Seattle’s 40-man roster is now at 39 players

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that right-handed pitcher Ruben Alaniz has been claimed off waivers by Cincinnati.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster is now at 39 players.

Alaniz (ah-lah-NIECE), 27 (turns 28 on June 14), made 4 relief appearances with the Mariners this season, posting a 20.25 ERA (9 ER, 4.0 IP) while striking out 6 and walking 3. He began the season with AAA Tacoma before being recalled by the Mariners on April 12. He made his Major League debut on April 12 vs. Houston. He was optioned to Tacoma on April 21 (post-game). In 10 appearances with the Rainiers this season, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander was 2-1 with 2 saves and a 6.39 ERA (9 ER, 12.2 IP) with 23 strikeouts and 7 walks. 

Alaniz was signed by Seattle as a free agent on Nov. 15, 2018. He was originally signed by the Houston Astros as a non-drafted free agent on Aug. 14, 2009. The McAllen, TX, native has spent parts of 10 minor league seasons with Houston (2010-15), Detroit (2016-17), Tampa Bay (2018) and Seattle (2019).
