Rockies Select Four Players on MLB Draft's Second and Final Day
Rockies select three pitchers and one shortstop in rounds two through five
The Colorado Rockies concluded the second and final day of Major League Baseball's 2020 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday, selecting four players in rounds two through five.
After selecting two high school players in the Draft's first day on Wednesday, the Rockies picked three players from the college ranks on Thursday.
The club's lone high school selection on Thursday was Case Williams, a right-handed pitcher from Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, Colo … Williams joins Pine Creek's Ryan Warner (third round, 2012) and Greeley Central's Shawn Chacon (third round, 1996) as the only Colorado high school players to be selected by the Rockies in the first four rounds of the First-Year Player Draft … it is the highest a Colorado high school player has been drafted since left-handed pitcher Brock Burke was selected in the third round out of Evergreen High School by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014.

With the 46th overall pick in the second round of the Draft, the Rockies selected right-handed pitcher Chris McMahon, a junior out of the University of Miami (Fla.) … the native of West Chester, Penn., went 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA (25.2 IP, 3 ER) over four starts in the abbreviated 2020 season with five walks and 38 strikeouts … from 2018-20, the 6-foot-2, 217-pound righty combined to go 7-3 with a 3.28 ERA (112.1 IP, 41 ER), 37 walks and 123 strikeouts … was selected as a 2020 Collegiate Baseball All-America Second Team member, a 2019 All-ACC Academic, and was selected to the 2019 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team … was previously selected by Atlanta in the 33rd round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft … attended West Chester Rustin High School, where he led the team to league championships each of his three high school seasons … was conference Player of the Year in 2017.
Sam Weatherly, a left-handed pitcher out of Clemson University, was selected by Colorado in the third round (81st overall) … as a junior, went 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA (22.2 IP, 2 ER), 14 walks and 43 strikeouts across four starts for the Tigers in 2020 … the 6-foot-4, 205-pound native of Howell, Mich., spent the 2019 season exclusively as a reliever and went 2-0 with a 3.37 ERA (29.1 IP, 11 ER) with 30 walks and 46 strikeouts … across 39 appearances with nine starts in his college career, combined to go 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA (72.1 IP, 28 ER), 61 walks and 106 strikeouts … was originally selected by Toronto in the 27th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, but did not sign … made 11 appearances (one start) for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2019, going 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA (16.2 IP, 8 ER) with 18 strikeouts.
In the fourth round, the Rockies selected Castle Rock, Colo., native Case Williams, a right-handed pitcher out of Douglas County High School … the 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior was rated as the top right-handed pitcher in Colorado by both Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report … the Santa Clara University-commit went 14-2 with a 2.98 ERA (94.0 IP, 31 ER) and 134 strikeouts across his high school career, including 8-1 with a 1.81 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 2019 … a member of the Rockies Senior Scout Team, Williams pitched a no-hitter on March 28, 2019 against Cherokee Trail (no runs, 11 strikeouts).
With their fifth and final pick of the 2020 Draft the Rockies selected shortstop Jack Blomgren, a junior from the University of Michigan … the 5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitter batted .286 with three doubles and one home run in 2020, reaching base in all 15 games before the season was canceled … in 2019, was named All-Big Ten Second Team and was named to the NCAA College World Series All-Tournament Team after totaling nine hits in the Wolverines' run to the College World Series Championship game … in 137 career games across three seasons with the Wolverines, the Milton, Wis., native batted .276 (127-for-460) with 18 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 71 RBI and 18 stolen bases.
