DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced a pair of staff promotions in the club's athletic training department. Kevin Rand has been promoted to Senior Director, Medical Services, while Doug Teter has been promoted to Head Athletic Trainer.
In his new role, Rand will be based in Lakeland, FL, and will oversee the athletic training efforts of the entire organization. Teter will direct the day-to-day efforts of the club's Major League athletic training department.
The 2018 season will mark Rand's 37th in professional baseball and his 16th with the Tigers after joining the club in October, 2002 as the team's Head Athletic Trainer. Under his leadership, the Tigers training staff was named the Athletic Training Staff of the Year in 2006 by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainer's Society (PBATS). Rand served as a trainer for the 2014 MLB All-Star Tour of Japan and was the Head Athletic Trainer for the American League All-Star Team during the 2005 All-Star Game at Comerica Park. Prior to joining the Tigers, Rand spent the 2002 season as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Montreal Expos after spending the previous nine seasons in the same position with the Florida Marlins. Before his time with the Marlins, he spent 11 years in the New York Yankees organization, including the last four (1989-92) as the Minor League Head Athletic Trainer/Rehabilitation Supervisor.
A 1981 graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine, Rand is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), in addition to being an NSCA certified personal trainer. Rand and his wife, Tisa, reside in Lakeland, FL, and the couple has four sons, Keegan, Kamden, Kallen and Kashton.
Teter will begin his 26th season in the Tigers organization in 2018 after serving as the club's Minor League Medical Coordinator for seven seasons before joining the Major League staff in 2006. Teter was a member of the 2006 training staff, which was named the Athletic Training Staff of the Year by PBATS. He was also named the Dwight Lowry Award winner as the Tigers Player Development Man of the Year in 2001. Teter originally joined the Tigers in 1993 as a trainer at Single A Fayetteville and served in the same role with Single A Jamestown in 1994 and Single A Lakeland in 1995-96. Teter was the club's Rehabilitation Coordinator in 1997-98.
Teter graduated from Central Michigan University in 1992 with a degree in sports medicine. He earned a master's degree in sports medicine and health care from the University of Alabama in 2002. Teter is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. A native of Constantine, MI, he currently resides in Lakeland, FL, with his wife, Joya, and three sons, Zachary, Deacon and Matthew.
The rest of the Major League Athletic Training staff will remain intact with Matt Rankin (fifth season) serving as Assistant Athletic Trainer and Robbie Williams (second season) as Physical Therapist.
