The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitchers Ray Castro and Joseph Jarneski from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-hander Nate Jones, international signing bonus pool money and cash considerations.
Jarneski, 19, has appeared in 10 games with the Arizona Rookie League Rangers this season, going 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA (3 ER/16.2 IP) and 16 strikeouts. The 6-foot, 170-pound Jarneski missed the entire 2018 season while recovering from right elbow surgery in September 2017. A native of Keaau, Hawaii, Jarneski made eight appearances in 2017 after being selected in the 12th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Hilo (Hawai'i) High School.
Castro, 22, is 4-0 with a 2.02 ERA (8 ER/35.2 IP), 1.06 WHIP, 28 strikeouts and zero home runs allowed in nine appearances (seven starts) this season with the Dominican Summer League Rangers. A native of San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Castro made 13 combined appearances between the DSL Rangers and AZL Rangers in 2018. The 6-foot-3, 165-pound Castro is 7-6 with a 2.83 ERA (25 ER/101.2 IP), 79 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP in 31 career games (15 starts) in the Texas system. He originally was signed as an international free agent on April 6, 2016.
Jarneski will be assigned to the AZL White Sox, and Castro to the DSL Sox.
Jones, 33, is currently on the 60-day injured list following surgery on his right forearm. He appeared in just 13 games with Chicago this season, going 0-1 with a 3.48 ERA (4 ER/10.1 IP), one save and 10 strikeouts. Jones went 22-13 with a 3.48 ERA (101 ER/291.1 IP), nine saves, 69 holds and 318 strikeouts in 284 relief appearances over eight seasons (2012-19) with the White Sox.
