Prior to tonight's game vs. Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Mike Pelfrey from Class AAA Charlotte, reinstated catcher Geovany Soto from the 10-day disabled list and transferred outfielder Charlie Tilson to the 60-day disabled list.
Pelfrey, 33, takes the roster spot of right-hander James Shields, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list last night (retroactive to April 18) with a strained right lat. He went 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA (5 ER/6.0 IP) over two starts with Charlotte this season after signing as a minor-league free agent on April 5.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Pelfrey has spent parts of 11 seasons in the major leagues with the Mets (2006-12), Minnesota (2013-15) and Detroit (2016), going 65-91 with a 4.57 ERA (740 ER/1,356.1 IP) and 759 strikeouts over 241 games (235 starts). His best season came with the Mets in 2010 when he went 15-9 with a 3.66 ERA (83 ER/204.0 IP) over 34 games (33 starts).
Soto, 34, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on April 13 (retroactive to April 12) with right elbow inflammation. He is 4-15 (.267) with three home runs, five RBI and three runs scored over five games this season, his second with the White Sox (also 2015).
Tilson, 24, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on April 2 (retroactive to March 30) with a stress reaction in his right foot.
The White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
