Prior to tonight's game at Toronto, the Chicago White Sox placed catcher Kevan Smith on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 24) with sacroiliac joint dysfunction and purchased the contract of catcher Hector Sanchez from Class AAA Charlotte.
Sanchez, 26, is hitting .143 (4-28) with one double, two home runs, three RBI and one walk over eight games with Charlotte in 2016. He has thrown out 2-4 (50.0 percent) of attempted basestealers. Sanchez, who will wear uniform No. 29, was signed by the White Sox as a minor-league free agent on December 22, 2015.
A native of Maracay, Venezuela, Sanchez appeared in 244 games with San Francisco from 2011-15, batting .240 (143-597) with 33 doubles, 10 home runs and 87 RBI. He has thrown out 20.0 percent (27-135) of attempted basestealers in his career. Sanchez was a member of the Giants 2012 World Series championship team, appearing in four postseason games. He originally was signed by San Francisco as a free agent on July 12, 2006.
Smith, 26, was recalled from the Knights prior to Sunday's game vs. Texas. He was scheduled to make his major-league debut last night before being scratched from the starting lineup.
Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 39.
