Prior to tonight's game vs. the Yankees, the Chicago White Sox returned left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodón from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte and reinstated him from the 60-day disabled list. To make room for Rodón on the 40-man roster, the White Sox transferred right-hander Zach Putnam to the 60-day disabled list.
Rodón, 24, takes the active roster spot of right-hander Juan Minaya, who was optioned to Charlotte following last night's game. Rodón was placed on the 10-day disabled list on April 2 with left biceps bursitis and transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 4. He made one rehab start with Class A Winston-Salem and three with Charlotte from June 6-23.
The No. 3 overall pick the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, Rodón went 9-10 with a 4.04 ERA (74 ER/165.0 IP) and 168 strikeouts over 28 starts with the Sox in 2016, fanning 10-plus batters in each of his last two starts.
He matched Joe Cowley's franchise and American League record by striking out the first seven batters of his final start on September 30 vs. Minnesota. Including his previous start on September 25 vs. Cleveland, Rodón struck out 10 consecutive batters, which tied Tom Seaver (1970) and Eric Gagne (2003) for the longest streak in the major leagues over the last 50 years (Elias).
Putnam, 29, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on April 25 (retroactive to April 23) and underwent successful Tommy John surgery on June 22 in a procedure performed by Dr. James Andrews. He posted a 1.04 ERA (1 ER/8.2 IP) with two hits allowed over seven appearances this season.
