Will Craig named to All-Star Futures team

Pittsburgh Pirates minor league first baseman Will Craig has been selected to the National League roster for the All-Star Futures Game. The announcement was made by Major League Baseball. The game will take place on Sunday, July 7, at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Craig will be one of 24 former first round picks participating in this year’s Futures Game.

Craig has spent the entire 2019 campaign with Triple-A Indianapolis, where he is hitting .258 (71-for-275) with 12 doubles, 16 home runs and 45 RBI in 73 games. He entered today tied for second among all Pirates minor leaguers with 16 home runs behind Mason Martin (20) and tied for third overall with 131 total bases, trailing only Mason Martin (151) and Hunter Owen (136).

The 24-year-old Craig was selected by the Pirates 16th overall in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Wake Forest University.

Craig spent the entire 2018 season with Double-A Altoona, where he was named to the Eastern League’s mid- and post-season All-Star teams while also being voted as the team’s MVP. He led the Eastern League in RBI (102), which ranked fifth in all of minor league baseball, while becoming just the second player in Altoona history to reach triple digits in RBI, joining Adam Hyzdu (106 in 2000). He ended the season by being tabbed as the “Best Defensive First Baseman” in the Eastern League by Baseball America.

Craig also played in the Arizona Fall League following the 2018 season and hit .304 with three doubles, six home runs and 18 RBI in 21 games. He finished tied for the league lead in home runs, tied for third in total bases (45) and third in slugging percentage (.570) while being named to MLB Pipeline’s All-AFL team.
