He was the talk of the collegiate baseball world -- and, really, the baseball world at large, in 2021. Jack Leiter, taken second overall in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Rangers, was mesmerizing every time he took the mound for Vanderbilt. But who is Jack Leiter? Here's a guide to the player who is the Rangers' No. 1 prospect and No. 17 overall per MLB Pipeline:

Primary position: RHP

He struck out the most batters in a single College World Series outing in 25 years

Leiter racked up 15 strikeouts over eight innings in Vanderbilt's 1-0 loss to N.C. State on June 21, 2021. It tied Mississippi State's Will Bednar, who fanned 15 on the previous Sunday, for the most strikeouts in a College World Series outing in a quarter century.

He was named a finalist for the 2021 Golden Spikes Award

The two other finalists for college baseball's highest individual honor were Leiter's rotation mate Kumar Rocker and Arkansas right-hander Kevin Kopps.

He tossed 20 consecutive no-hit innings

Leiter had his freshman season cut short when the college season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it didn't take long for him to make history in 2021, with two overpowering starts in which he didn't yield a single hit. He no-hit South Carolina on March 20, striking out 16. It was the first regular-season, complete-game no-hitter for Vanderbilt since 1971. He followed that up with seven no-hit frames against Missouri. Overall, he put together a 20-inning hitless streak and a 25-inning scoreless streak.

He posted video-game numbers in 2021

Leiter finished the season with a 2.13 ERA and struck out 179 batters in 110 innings pitched -- that works out to a strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio of 14.6.

He is the son of former MLB pitcher Al Leiter

Leiter's family is well-known in baseball -- his father, Al, was a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion over 19 MLB seasons from 1987-2005, and his uncle, Mark, pitched 11 MLB seasons. Speaking of no-hitters, Al Leiter threw one for the Marlins against the Rockies on May 11, 1996.

He was drafted by the Yankees in 2019

Leiter struck out 95 over 57 innings as a senior at Delbarton School and was named the 2019 New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year. He was drafted by the Yankees in the 20th round of that year's MLB Draft. He might have gone as high as the first round, but it was known that he planned to go to Vanderbilt.
