Rangers re-sign Herget, DFA Heineman

December 11th, 2020

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have re-signed pitcher and designated outfielder for assignment.

Both players were not offered contracts at the Dec. 2 non-tender deadline and became free agents. Heineman was re-signed the next day, but was designated for assignment on Friday because the Rangers needed room for Herget on the 40-man roster.

Herget agreed to a split contract that includes a $700,000 Major League salary. He pitched in 20 games for the Rangers in 2020 and was 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. In 19 2/3 innings, he allowed 13 hits and 14 walks while striking out 17. He will compete for a spot in the Rangers' bullpen in Spring Training.

Heineman goes on outright waivers and will be assigned to Triple-A if he is not claimed by another team. The Rangers ran into a 40-man roster crunch after acquiring first baseman Nate Lowe from the Rays on Thursday and taking pitcher Brett de Geus in the Rule 5 Draft.
