Byron Buxton has played his last game of 2026.
Currently on the injured list with a right hip impingement, Buxton will undergo season-ending arthroscopic hip surgery on Sept. 18, the club announced Friday.
The announcement comes one week after Twins manager Derek Shelton acknowledged that Buxton would likely undergo surgery during the offseason. Instead, Buxton will get on the operating table with a handful of games to go in Minnesota’s season.
Buxton has played in 93 games this season and recorded a .254/.319/.511 slash line with 25 homers. Buxton has dealt with hip issues off and on dating as far back as 2021, and those issues flared up again in May of this season. He then went on the injured list with a right hip strain in July and was sidelined for about five weeks. He returned to action on Aug. 13 before landing back on the IL due to his current ailment on Aug. 30.
The Twins (69-77) enter Friday’s series opener against the Guardians six games back in the AL Central and 4 1/2 games out of a Wild Card spot.
