Paddack undergoes second Tommy John surgery

Twins right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Wednesday morning, manager Rocco Baldelli announced.

The news put a slight damper on Minnesota’s 14-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics, but it wasn’t completely unexpected. Paddack, acquired in April in a trade that sent closer Taylor Rogers to San Diego, had been dealing with elbow inflammation since leaving his May 8 start.

It’s the second reconstructive elbow surgery for the 26-year-old Paddack, who also had a Tommy John procedure in 2016. This latest surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas.

Baldelli said the surgery went as well as could be expected, and that a timeline for recovery will be known soon.

A typical recovery period from a Tommy John procedure could conceivably sideline Paddack into the middle of next season.

“We need the best possible version of him, and the best possible version of Chris Paddack is to get himself healthy and to have this procedure and rehab himself and get back to full strength,” Baldelli said. “He’s an ultra-talented young guy with a great work ethic, and I think he has an incredibly bright future with us.”
