“Beltin’ Bill” Melton Home Run King Bobblehead

Chicago White Sox Charities (CWSC) is honoring the late 1971 American League All-Star and fan-favorite third baseman Bill Melton with a limited-edition bobblehead. This exclusive collectible item benefits CWSC and is available for purchase online and at the Charities Corner (Section 154) at Rate Field.

Commemorating Melton's AL-leading 33-home run season in 1971, the bobblehead features “Beltin’ Bill” tipping his cap to fans while standing atop a gold crown with light-up jewels. Wearing the iconic 1970s red pinstripe uniform, Melton became the first player in White Sox history to hit 30+ home runs in a single season.

The crown design pays tribute to a legendary moment from the end of that historic season – a blend of clubhouse humor and baseball lore. Tied for the AL home run lead entering the final game, manager Chuck Tanner penciled Melton into the leadoff spot to give him one last shot at claiming the AL home run title outright. Melton delivered with a towering solo shot off Milwaukee’s Bill Parsons. In a playful nod to Babe Ruth’s “Sultan of Swat” award, then-GM Roland Hemond presented him with a toy gold crown in the clubhouse postgame.

Melton's 154 career home runs led the franchise until Hall of Famer Harold Baines surpassed him in 1987. He spent eight of his 10 MLB seasons with the White Sox before enjoying a nearly two-decade career as a pre- and postgame analyst for the team’s television broadcasts. There, he became one of the club’s most familiar voices, helping further cement his legacy both on and off the field.

For the last decade, CWSC has held a bobblehead fundraising campaign. Previous campaigns have commemorated former team captain Paul Konerko in 2014, José Abreu in 2015, legendary two-sport icon Bo Jackson in 2016, Hall of Famer Tim “Rock” Raines in 2017, World Series Champion A.J. Pierzynski in 2018, Hall of Famer Harold Baines in 2019, Ford C. Frick award winner Ken “Hawk” Harrelson in 2021, Hall of Fame legend Minnie Miñoso in 2022, World Series Champion Mark Buehrle in 2023 and Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk in 2024 – raising more than $720,000 for CWSC.
