NEW YORK -- Guardians double-play partners Andrés Giménez and Amed Rosario found themselves back at Citi Field on Friday, a place they once called home while playing with the Mets.

They were part of the big trade that sent shortstop Francisco Lindor and right-hander Carlos Carrasco to New York in January 2021.

Since they arrived in Cleveland, Rosario and Giménez had combined for a 15.5 bWAR, while Lindor and Carrasco had combined for a 9.8 bWAR for New York entering Friday’s series opener.

It’s safe to say the trade has worked out for Cleveland so far.

Giménez played 41 games for the Mets in 2020, hit .263 and finished seventh in the National League Rookie of the Year balloting. He said he would not have reached the big leagues if not for then-manager Luis Rojas, who he knew dating back to his Minor League days.

The biggest advice Rojas gave him was to respect the game of baseball and play it the right way.

“I’m thankful for him because he had trust in me,” Giménez said about Rojas. “I remember he was my manager back in Double-A. I’m thankful to him for giving me the chance to play the game.”

Rosario was the everyday shortstop for the Mets in 2018 and ‘19. His best season was in ‘19, when he hit a career-high .287 with 15 home runs and 72 RBIs. He said he was happy to be in the ballpark where he was able to get his big league start.

“It’s good to come back to the place where my dream of being a baseball player came true,” Rosario said through interpreter Agustin Rivero.

Battenfield on IL; Williams to get a look?

The Guardians placed right hander Peyton Battenfield on the injured list on Friday because of right shoulder inflammation.

According to manager Terry Francona, Battenfield threw eight pitches on the mound at Citi Field, but it felt like he was protecting his shoulder. A New York doctor was slated to look at him close to game time. Then the Guardians will figure out a game plan on what to do with Battenfield moving forward.

Cleveland has not announced who will replace Battenfield in the rotation, but the team needs a starter for Monday’s series opener against the White Sox at Progressive Field.

Right-hander Gavin Williams, ranked the Guardians’ No. 1 prospect and No. 19 overall by MLB Pipeline, is a possibility. He has been almost unhittable in the Minor Leagues, allowing a combined five runs in 34 innings with 47 strikeouts for Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Akron.

With Battenfield on the IL, the Guardians called up reliever Tim Herrin from Columbus. This is his second stint with Cleveland this season, as he previously appeared in nine games and allowed eight runs in 9 2/3 innings.
