The Boston Red Sox have added right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol as a non-roster invitee to the team's 2016 Spring Training roster.
President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
The Red Sox have now invited a total of 16 players to Major League Spring Training camp as non-roster invitees.
Marmol, 33, is 23-35 with 117 saves and a 3.57 ERA (229 ER/577.0 IP) in 519 career appearances in the majors (13 starts) between the Chicago Cubs (2006-13), Los Angeles Dodgers (2013), and Miami Marlins (2014). An All-Star closer for the Cubs in 2008, Marmol has fanned 11.6 batters per nine innings pitched in his nine-year big league career (744 SO), allowing just 385 hits to go along with 395 walks. The native of the Dominican Republic spent the 2015 season at Triple-A Columbus in the Cleveland Indians system, going 3-1 with 13 saves, a 2.03 ERA (7 ER/31.0 IP), and 48 strikeouts in 28 outings. In eight games for Licey of the Dominican Winter League this past off-season, Marmol posted a 2.57 ERA (2 ER/7.0 IP).
