Prior to tonight's game at Toronto, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Miguel Gonzalez from Class AAA Charlotte. He takes the roster spot of right-hander Erik Johnson, who was optioned to Charlotte following yesterday's win over Texas.
Gonzalez, 31, has made two starts with the Knights this season, going 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (3 ER/11.0 IP), 10 strikeouts and a .194 (7-36) opponents average. He signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on April 3 after being released by Baltimore on March 30.
Gonzalez, 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, spent the entire 2015 season in the Orioles rotation, going 9-12 with a 4.91 ERA (79 ER/144.2 IP) and 109 strikeouts over 26 starts. He established a career low with a 3.23 ERA (57 ER/159.0 IP) over 27 games (26 starts) in 2014.
A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, Gonzalez is 39-33 with a 3.82 ERA (246 ER/580.1 IP) and 417 strikeouts in 101 career appearances (95 starts) over four major-league seasons, all with Baltimore. He originally was signed by the Los Angeles Angels as a minor-league free agent on December 13, 2004. Gonzalez was selected by Boston in the Rule 5 draft on December 11, 2008 and signed by the Orioles on February 28, 2012.
Gonzalez, who will wear uniform No. 58, will be the 13th native of Mexico to play for the White Sox. The last was Esteban Loaiza, who pitched in 58 games for Chicago from 2003-04 and in 2008.
Following the move, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 38.
