The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Anthony Ranaudo "ran-AW-doh" from Texas in exchange for right-hander Matt Ball and have optioned right-hander Scott Carroll to Class AAA Charlotte.
Ranaudo, 26, also has been optioned to Charlotte. He was with the Rangers this season from May 6-10 and went 1-0 with a 17.18 ERA (7 ER/3.2 IP) over two relief outings. Ranaudo also was 1-1 with a 2.02 ERA (3 ER/13.1 IP), 18 strikeouts and just six hits allowed over three starts with Class AAA Round Rock.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Ranaudo was acquired by Texas from Boston on January 27, 2015 in exchange for left-hander Robbie Ross. He has appeared in 13 games (nine starts) over parts of three major-league seasons with the Red Sox (2014) and Rangers (2015-16), going 5-4 with a 6.33 ERA (41 ER/58.1 IP). In 2014, he became the first Red Sox pitcher in 19 years to win his first three major-league starts.
Ranaudo was named International League Pitcher of the Year with Class AAA Pawtucket in 2014 and Eastern League Pitcher of the Year with Class AA Portland in 2013. He originally was selected by Boston with a supplemental pick (39th overall) in the 2010 draft out of Louisiana State University.
Ball, 21, is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA (8 ER/16.0 IP) and 24 strikeouts over 10 relief appearances with Class A Kannapolis this season. He was selected by the Sox in the 11th round of the 2013 draft.
Following the move, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 38.
Carroll, 31, appeared in three games with the White Sox after being recalled from Charlotte on May 6, allowing three runs over 2.1 IP. He also has pitched in three games with the Knights this season, going 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA (5 ER/3.2 IP).
To take Carroll's place on the 25-man roster, the White Sox will make a corresponding roster move prior to tomorrow's game at Yankee Stadium.
