Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto today announced that the Mariners have agreed to accept a Player to be Named Later (PTBNL), or cash considerations, from the San Diego Padres in exchange for declining the return of outfielder Jabari Blash from the San Diego Padres.

Blash, 26, was selected by the Oakland Athletics off the Mariners Triple-A Tacoma roster with the 6th selection in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 10, 2015. Oakland traded Blash to San Diego that same day.

San Diego designated Blash for assignment on May 13 after Blash hit .120 (3x25) with 1 double and 13 strikeouts in 23 games this season.

Prior to being removed from a Major League roster, players selected in the Rule 5 Draft must clear waivers. If the player involved clears waivers, he must be offered back to the team that held his rights prior to being selected in the Rule 5 Draft. In this case, Seattle and the Padres agreed on a trade rather than having Blash returned to the Mariners.
