LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Dodgers today acquired outfielder Josh Reddick and left-handed pitcher Rich Hill from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league right-handed pitchers Jharel Cotton, Grant Holmes and Frankie Montas.
Reddick, 29, is batting .296 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in 68 games this year, including hitting safely in nine of his last 11 games since July 18 with a .318 batting average (14-for-44) in that span. The left-handed hitting Reddick has posted a .341 batting average with runners in scoring position (15-for-44) and a .319 mark with runners on base (29-for-91), while exceling against right-handed pitching this year, batting .341 (61-for-179) with all 20 of his extra-base hits (11 doubles, one triple, eight homers).
In eight big-league seasons with the Red Sox (2009-11) and Athletics (2012-16), Reddick, a 2012 Gold Glove Award winner, has a .255 batting average with 94 homers and 337 RBI in 739 games after being selected by Boston in the 17^th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Middle Georgia College.
Hill, 36, has a 9-3 record with a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts with the A's this year, limiting opposing hitters to a .201 batting average with a 1.09 WHIP. Hill leads the American League (min. 75.0 IP) in ERA and home runs allowed per 9.0 innings (0.24, 2 HR/76.0IP), while ranking among the league's best in opponents' average (2^nd), WHIP (9^th) and strikeouts per 9.0 innings (10.66, 90 SO/76.0 IP). Prior to going on the disabled list on July 30 (retroactive to July 18) with a blister on his pitching hand, Hill had been unbeaten in his previous eight starts from May 7-July 17, going 6-0 with a 2.05 ERA (10 ER/44.0 IP) and a .184 opponents' batting average.
Hill has a 35-26 career record with a 4.23 ERA in 215 games (88 starts) in 12 MLB seasons with the Cubs (2005-08), Orioles (2009), Red Sox (2010-12, '15), Indians (2012), Angels (2014), Yankees (2014) and Athletics (2016) after being selected in the fourth round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Michigan.
Cotton, 24, went 8-5 with a 4.90 ERA in 22 games (16 starts) with Triple-A Oklahoma City this year to earn a selection to the All-Star Futures Game. In five minor league seasons, he's combined to go 23-24 with a 3.77 ERA in 94 games (59 starts) after being selected by the Dodgers in the 20^th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University.
Holmes, 20, went 8-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 20 games (18 starts) with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga this year and has posted a 16-11 record with a 3.61 ERA in 55 games (52 starts) in three minor league seasons in the Dodger organization. He was originally selected in the first round (22^nd overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Conway (SC) High School.
Montas, 23, has spent most of the season on the DL due to rib resection surgery in February, but has combined to post a 2.25 ERA in seven games (four starts) with Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa. Montas, who appeared in seven big league games with Chicago-AL last season in his only big-league action, was acquired by the Dodgers from the White Sox on Dec. 16, 2015 in a three-team trade and has gone 16-25 with a 3.79 ERA in 99 games (84 starts) in seven minor league seasons in the Red Sox, White Sox and Dodger organizations.
