The Oakland A's placed right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm and selected right-handed pitcher Chris Smith from Triple-A Nashville, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A's transferred catcher Josh Phegley to the 60-day disabled list.
Gray is 5-11 with a 5.74 ERA and .286 opponents batting average in 21 starts for the A's. He has the highest ERA in the majors and is tied for third in the American League in losses. This is his second stint on the disabled list this year as he was out from May 21 to June 4 with a strained right trapezius. The A's have now used the disabled list an Oakland record tying 25 times this year.
Smith has spent the entire season at Nashville where he went 6-8 with a 3.93 ERA and .239 opponents batting average in 22 starts. He was 1-5 with a 5.21 ERA over his first seven starts through May 9, but is 5-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 15 starts since then. The 35-year-old right-hander returns to the majors for the first time since 2010 when he logged a 5.40 ERA in three relief appearances with Milwaukee. Smith is 1-0 with a 5.19 ERA in 50 career relief appearances with Boston (2008) and the Brewers (2009-10). He pitched in the Mariners farm system in 2011, was out of baseball in 2012, and had stints with independent teams in Wichita (2013) and Sugar Land (2014) before signing a minor league deal with San Diego in 2014. Smith was a non-roster invitee with the A's this spring.
