Mariners select right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland from AAA Tacoma

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced that the club has selected right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland from AAA Tacoma. To make room on the Mariners Major League 40-man roster, OF Daniel Robertson has been designated for assignment.

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced that the club has selected right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland from AAA Tacoma. To make room on the Mariners Major League 40-man roster, OF Daniel Robertson has been designated for assignment.
 
Wieland (#47) is scheduled to be the starting pitcher in tonight's (7:05 pm PT) game at Oakland.
 
Wieland will take the 25-man roster spot of right-handed pitcher Jarrett Grube, who was optioned to AAA Tacoma after Wednesday's (Aug. 10) game.
 
The Mariners now have 10 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Robertson to the minors.
 
Wieland, 26, is 11-5 with a 5.38 ERA (62 ER, 103.2 IP) in 22 games, including 20 starts, with AAA Tacoma this season. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound right hander has recorded 93 strikeouts and 31 walks with the Rainiers. Among Pacific Coast League leaders, Wieland ranks T2nd in wins (11) and T10th in strikeouts (93). Over his last 17 games (15 starts) since May 4, Wieland is 10-2 with a 3.67 ERA (37 ER, 90.2 IP) with 83 strikeouts and 23 walks. Wieland has earned the win in each of his last 5 appearances (4 starts), posting a record of 5-0 with a 2.37 ERA (8 ER, 30.1 IP) with 33 strikeouts and 4 walks.
 
Wieland was acquired from Los Angeles (NL) on Jan. 12 in exchange for minor league infielder Erick Mejia. He spent the majority of the 2015 season with AAA Oklahoma where he was 10-5 with a 4.59 ERA (58 ER, 113.2 IP) with 92 strikeouts in 22 games including 21 starts. He also made two starts in the Majors with Los Angeles (NL), going 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA (8 ER, 8.2 IP) with 4 strikeouts.
 
In three Major League seasons with San Diego (2013-14) and Los Angeles-NL (2015), he has combined to go 1-5 with a 5.85 ERA (31 ER, 47.2 IP) with 36 strikeouts in 11 games including 9 starts. In his minor league career in the Texas, San Diego, Los Angeles-NL and Seattle organizations, he is 56-32 with a 3.80 ERA (293 ER, 694.0 IP) with 629 strikeouts in 139 career games, including 127 starts. Wieland was originally selected by Texas in the 4th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Manogue High School (Reno, NV).
 
Robertson, 30, hit .263 (5x19) with 1 run, 1 double, 1 RBI and 1 walk in 9 games with Seattle this season. In 95 games with AAA Tacoma this season, Robertson hit .281 (94x335) with 39 runs, 14 doubles, 7 triples, 6 home runs, 40 RBI, 29 walks and 10 stolen bases. He was claimed off waivers from Los Angeles - AL on Nov. 6, 2015. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with Texas (2014), Los Angeles - AL (2015) and Seattle (2016), Robertson hit .273 (74x271) with 12 doubles, 1 triple and 29 RBI in 116 career games. In parts of 9 minor league seasons in the Padres, Rangers, Angels and Mariners organizations, Robertson hit .298 (986x3314) with 179 doubles, 33 home runs and 374 RBI in 888 career games.
