Pirates' Jung Ho Kang named National League Player of the Week

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending September 11th.

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending September 11th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
In seven games last week, Kang paced the Majors with 25 total bases and was tied for first with 12 hits. The Gwangju, South Korea native also led the NL with four home runs; ranked second with a .522 batting average, a 1.087 slugging percentage and a .593 on-base percentage; and was tied for second with 10 RBIs. 
On Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park, Kang produced his third career multi-homer game as part of a 3-for-5, three-RBI performance. The 29-year-old clubbed a solo shot in the fourth inning and took fellow countryman Seung Hwan Oh deep in the ninth inning of an eventual 9-7 loss against their NL Central rival. In Wednesday's series finale between the two clubs, Kang capped a second consecutive three-hit outing with a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie and giving the Buccos a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish. Kang also plated Pittsburgh's second run of the day with an RBI single in the first inning. He homered and drove in three in a 3-for-5 effort in Saturday's 8-7 home loss against the Cincinnati Reds, giving him a career-high 18 home runs on the season along with 51 RBIs. The sophomore slugger clubbed 15 homers with 58 RBIs in 126 games during his rookie campaign in 2015. This is his first career Player of the Week honor.
Other noteworthy performances last week included Kang's Pirates teammate Ivan Nova (1-0, 1.00 ERA, CG, 4 SO, 9 IP); New York's Yoenis Cespedes (.273, 5 R, 6 H, 3 HR, 10 RBIs, .727 SLG); San Francisco's Hunter Pence (.522, 8 R, 12 H, 4 2B, HR, 4 RBIs, .826 SLG, .593 OBP); Colorado's Chad Bettis (1-0, 1.13 ERA, SHO, 12 SO, 16 IP); Washington's Max Scherzer (1-0, 1.32 ERA, 13 SO, 13 2/3 IP); and Adam Wainwright (2-0, 3.46 ERA, 12 SO, 13 IP) of the Cardinals.
