SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced plans for their annual community caravan, featuring 10 Days of Giving beginning Wednesday, December 7. Each day through Friday, December 16 will feature a Padres presence at and support of community events and organizations throughout San Diego County and the Baja region. Padres players, coaches, alumni, executives and broadcasters, along with Pad Squad and the Swinging Friar, will attend numerous events helping to spread holiday cheer and give back to the community, specifically supporting efforts in the four areas of focus of the Padres Foundation: LIVE (children's health), LEARN (education), PLAY (youth baseball/softball and fitness) and SERVE (military and first responders).
The Padres organization launched its holiday giving efforts in November with several events assisting those in need. The week prior to Thanksgiving, Padres outfielder Alex Dickerson, pitcher Robbie Erlin and front office staff were among those who helped to distribute 500 Thanksgiving meals as part of the Padres' inaugural Thanksgiving turkey distribution, in partnership with the San Diego Food Bank. That same week, pitcher Brandon Maurer and his wife, Kelsey, were on hand to help serve dinner to families from the Monarch School as part of its annual Thanksgiving festival on Saturday, November 19.
The 10 Days of Giving initiative begins Wednesday, December 7 with the Armed Services YMCA San Diego's Military Families Holiday Toy Program. At this annual event, Padres alumni, executives, Pad Squad and the Swinging Friar will assist military parents in picking out holiday gifts for their children.
The Padres will head south of the border on Saturday, December 10 to participate in the Centro de Rehabilitacion Infantil Teleton's (Center for Infant Rehabilitation Telethon) annual telethon. Padres players, along with Spanish television broadcasters Eduardo Ortega and Carlos Hernandez, will visit the center to tour the facility and greet the kids while distributing gifts. Proceeds from the telethon benefit CRIT's centers throughout Mexico that assist families with children with disabilities.
As part of the Padres' continuing partnership with SDG&E on their Going to Bat for San Diego initiative, the organizations will join forces during the caravan to present donations to local organizations including Barrio Logan College InstituteDowntown San Diego Partnership's Clean & Safe Program and the San Diego Public Library Foundation.
In a first-time event for the Padres, the caravan will travel to Liberty Station on Wednesday, December 14 for Rady Children's Hospital's Fantasy on Ice skating rink, where the Padres will treat patients and families from Rady's to a special VIP experience, including a private meet-and-greet with players and coaches.
