The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has reinstated left-handed pitcher Martin Perez from the 10-day disabled list and added right-handed pitcher Jason Grilli (#37) to the active roster. The team has placed right-handed pitcher Keone Kela on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 30, with right shoulder soreness, and optioned left-handed pitcher Dario Alvarez to Triple-A Round Rock.
Perez is scheduled to start tonight's homestand opener against the Boston Red Sox. He was placed on the disabled list on June 24, retroactive to June 23, with a fracture and laceration at the tip of his right thumb, an injury sustained when he caught his thumb in the hinge section of a hotel room door on the evening of June 22 in New York. He is 4-6 with a 4.27 ERA in 15 games/starts for Texas this season.
Grilli, 40, was acquired in a trade with Toronto yesterday and was added to active roster for tonight's series opener. He went 2-4 with one save and a 6.97 ERA (16 ER/20.2 IP) in 26 relief appearances for the Blue Jays this season before being designated for assignment on June 27. He compiled a 4.50 ERA (6 ER/12.0 IP) over his final 15 outings with Toronto, posting 13 strikeouts against 2 walks, including his most recent big league appearance on June 23 at Kansas City. He also pitched with the Rangers in 2009, making 30 appearances for Texas that year after a June 9 trade with Colorado.
Kela has gone 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA (9 ER/30.2 IP) in 30 relief appearances for Texas this season, including 9.0 scoreless innings over his last 9 games beginning June 10. He ranks among American League relief leaders in opponents average (2nd, .133) and opponents OPS (5th, .473). He will not be eligible to return from the disabled list until the All-Star break.
Alvarez has gone 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA in 20 appearances spanning three stints with Texas this season: Opening Day-May 7, May 8-June 8, and June 16-July 2.
After today's transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club's Major League roster, along with five players on the 60-day disabled list.
