Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster move:
Seattle's Major League (40-man) roster remains full at 40 players.
The Mariners had designated O'Malley for assignment on Saturday, Sept. 2.
O'Malley, 29, was recalled from his rehabilitation assignment on optioned to AAA Tacoma on Aug. 4. In 20 games overall (including his one game rehab assignment) with Tacoma, he hit .205 (16x78) with 3 doubles, 1 home run and 5 RBI with 4 walks and 17 strikeouts.
O'Malley was placed on the 10-day disabled list on March 31 while recovering from surgery to remove his appendix and transferred to the 60-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis on May 2. He hit .311 (14x45) with 12 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 13 walks and 1 stolen base in 14 game combined on rehabilitation assignment with Rookie AZL Mariners (7/7-11 & 7/20-23), AA Arkansas (7/24-8/2) and AAA Tacoma (8/3). O'Malley went 2-for-4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI in his only rehab game with Tacoma before being activated.
O'Malley hit .229 (48x210) with 24 runs, 9 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, and 17 RBI in 89 games with the Mariners last season. Prior to being recalled by Seattle on May 15, he hit .317 (27x82) with 15 runs, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, and 13 RBI in 25 games with AAA Tacoma. O'Malley signed with the Mariners as a free agent on Jan. 22, 2015. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Angels (2014) and Mariners (2015-current), he is a career .231 (62x268) hitter with 37 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 25 RBI in 124 career games. The native of Richland, Wash., was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 5th round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Southridge High School (Kennewick, WA).
