Angels select eight players on Day 2 of the 2018 First Year Player Draft

The Angels selected eight players today, all right-handed pitchers and four with North Carolina ties during rounds 3-10 today of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, as announced by Angels Director, Scouting, Matt Swanson. The draft will conclude tomorrow, June 6, with rounds 11-40.

The Angels selected eight players today, all right-handed pitchers and four with North Carolina ties during rounds 3-10 today of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, as announced by Angels Director, Scouting, Matt Swanson. The draft will conclude tomorrow, June 6, with rounds 11-40.
With their third round pick (93rd overall), the Angels selected RHS Aaron Hernandez from Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 170 pounds, he pitched to a 3-5 record with a 4.55 ERA, and struck out a career-high 102 batters in 83.0 innings this season, becoming the seventh all-time in school history to reach the 100 strikeout mark. Hernandez is the 12th player in school history to be drafted by the MLB, and third by the Angels (Trevor Foss 2013; 22nd round & Eric Weiss 2013; 35th round). Named the Perfect Game/Rawlings National College Pitcher of the Week and the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week in March 2018 after pitching a complete game shutout against Utah Valley where he recorded a career-best 15 strikeouts.
The Halos' fourth round pick (121 overall) was RHS Kyle Bradish, a junior from New Mexico State University. Bradish, 22, compiled a 25-8 record with 311 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .220 batting average over 272.0 innings during his three collegiate campaigns. He was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference First-Team, as well as the All-WAC Tournament Team and NCAA Lubbock All-Regional Team. The righty was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American during his freshman season. Bradish set new single-season school record for strikeouts with 140 and most by an Aggie since 1991.
With their fifth round pick, the Angels selected OF/RHS William English from Western International HS. Was selected by the Angels as an outfielder and right-handed starter. Pitched to a 3-0 record with a 0.93 ERA and 25 strikeouts in his first 15 innings this season, while hitting .419 with 11 walks and 15 stolen bases. English committed to play with the Tennessee Volunteers.  
RHR Austin Warren, a senior from UNC Wilmington, was selected as the Angels' sixth round pick. Pitched to an 8-0 record with two saves, a 1.75 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 46.1 innings in his last collegiate campaign. The Angels also selected their fourth NC native, RHR Andrew Wantz, as their seventh pick. Wantz, 22, went 23-8 with a 3.80 ERA with 278 strikeouts in his four seasons at UNC Greensboro, and was named the Southern Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year and Collegiate Baseball National Pitcher of the Week in his sophomore campaign.
Halos' chose another pitcher with their eighth round selection, RHR Tyler Smith, from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Smith, 22, finished his junior season with a 3-0 mark and a 0.30 ERA, and was named to the Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List by National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association for three consecutive seasons.

The Halos' ninth round pick and second selection from the state of Michigan was RHS Jake Lee, a senior at Oakland University. Finished his third campaign with the Golden Grizzlies tallying a 13.38 SO/9 and 112 strikeouts. Tossed a one-hit complete game with school record 14 strikeouts on March 25, 2018. Lee earned All-Horizon League second team honors by leading the Horizon League in strikeouts (100) which ranked 42nd in the country. He was also named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week twice in his last season.
To round out the second day of the draft, the Angels selected RHR Ben Morrison from Western Kentucky University with their 10th selection. Morrison led the team with 10.89 SO/9 and six saves and was named to the All-Academic Team during his sophomore campaign. He threw a career-best two scoreless and hitless frames and earned the win on Senior Day in his red-shirt junior season. Also earned a nomination to the 2018 All-Conference USA Honors, Second Team after posting a 1.29 ERA with 31 strikeouts and allowing only 20 hits for a .189 opponent batting average.
