The Boston Red Sox announced the following roster moves Saturday:
Second baseman Ian Kinsler was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.
Infielder Tony Renda was selected to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. He will wear number 38.
To make room for Renda on the 40-man roster, second baseman Dustin Pedroia was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Kinsler, 36, has gone 4-for-10 with two stolen bases, three runs scored, and two RBI in three games with the Red Sox since being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. In 54 games since May 29, the right-handed batter has hit .292 (61-for-209) with an .870 OPS, including .414 (24-for-58) with a 1.106 OPS in his last 16 games. He won the American League's Rawlings Gold Glove Award for second base in 2016 and was once again a finalist for the award in 2017. Selected by Texas in the 17th round of the 2003 June Draft, Kinsler has been named to four American League All-Star teams (2008, '10, '12, '14) and has finished in the top 30 in MVP voting four times, including an 11th-place showing in 2011.
Renda, 27, was signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on April 29, 2018. Originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the second round of the 2012 June Draft, the right-handed hitter has batted .353 (66-for-187) with five home runs and a .928 OPS this season between Double-A Portland (26 games) and Pawtucket (21 games). His lone major league experience came with the Cincinnati Reds in 2016, when he appeared in 32 games and made starts at second base, third base, right field, and left field. He has also hit .291 (719-for-2,471) in 644 minor league games in the Nationals (2012-15), New York Yankees (2015), Reds (2016-17), Arizona Diamondbacks (2017), and Red Sox (2018) organizations, spending the majority of his time at second base.
Pedroia, 34, began the season on the disabled list recovering from left knee surgery performed on October 25, 2017. He was reinstated on May 25 and appeared in three games with the Red Sox before returning to the disabled list on June 2 (retroactive to May 30). Selected by Boston in the second round of the 2004 June Draft, Pedroia has played his entire 13-year major league career with the Red Sox, batting .300 (1,803-for-6,011) with a .366 on-base percentage, 394 doubles, 15 triples, 140 home runs, 724 RBI, and 921 runs scored. A four-time All-Star, he was named the American League's Rookie of the Year in 2007 and Most Valuable Player in 2008. Pedroia has won four Rawlings Gold Glove Awards (2008, '11, '13-14), the most ever for a Red Sox infielder.
