White Sox purchase contract of José Ruiz from Birmingham

Prior to tonight's game vs. Detroit, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher José Ruiz from Class AA Birmingham and outrighted infielder Matt Skole to Class AAA Charlotte.

Prior to tonight's game vs. Detroit, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher José Ruiz from Class AA Birmingham and outrighted infielder Matt Skole to Class AAA Charlotte.u5:p

Ruiz, 23, combined to go 3-1 with a 3.07 ERA (20 ER/58.2 IP), 16 saves, 77 strikeouts (11.8 per 9.0 IP), and a .188 (39-207) opponents average over 43 appearances with Class A Winston-Salem and Birmingham this season, his first in the White Sox organization after being claimed off waivers from San Diego on December 22, 2017.u5:p

Ruiz, 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, began the season with Winston-Salem, posting a 2.70 ERA (4 ER/13.1 IP) over 10 appearances to earn a promotion to Birmingham. He was 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA (16 ER/45.1 IP) in 33 games with the Barons, and did not allow a run over 11.0 IP in August.u5:p

Ruiz, a native of Guacara, Venezuela, is 6-3 with a 3.95 ERA (53 ER/120.2 IP), 20 saves and 136 strikeouts in 98 career relief appearances over three Minor League seasons in the San Diego (2016-17) and White Sox (2018) organizations. He also appeared in one Major League game with the Padres, throwing 1.0 scoreless IP vs. the Mets on July 24, 2017.u5:p

Ruiz originally was signed by San Diego as an international free agent on July 2, 2011. He will wear uniform No. 66.u5:p

Skole, 29, spent most of the season with Charlotte, hitting .237 (102-431) with 28 doubles, 14 home runs, 61 RBIs and 50 runs scored over 121 games. He also appeared in four games with the White Sox, going 3-11 (.273) with a homer, RBI and two runs scored in his first Major League experience.u5:p

The Sox active roster increases to 30, and the 40-man roster remains at 40.u5:p
