Arizona Diamondbacks SS Nick Ahmed and RHP Zack Greinke have been named winners of the 2018 National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award®, as announced by Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc. The award recognizes the best defensive players at their respective positions as voted by Major League Baseball managers and coaches.
 
Since 2013, Arizona has boasted 9 Gold Glove Award winners, including multiple winners in each of the last 2 seasons (also: Greinke and Paul Goldschmidt in 2017), the first time in franchise history it has had multiple winners in consecutive seasons. 
 
Ahmed, 28, won his first career Gold Glove Award and is the first shortstop in team history to earn the honor. He was tied with Andrelton Simmons/LAA for the Major League lead at the position with a career-high 21 defensive runs saved, and was tied with Simmons for second overall behind only Oakland A's third baseman Matt Chapman (29). It was also the third-best defensive season in club history in terms of defensive runs saved, trailing only right fielder Gerardo Parra in 2013 (32) and second baseman Craig Counsell in 2005 (30). 
 
Ahmed's .985 fielding percentage (9 E in 606 TC) ranked second among NL shortstops behind Freddy Galvis/SD (.986), and he was 1 of 5 NL shortstops since 2010 to commit 9 or fewer errors in 600 or more chances, joining Troy Tulowitzki/COL in 2011, Simmons/ATL in 2015, Jordy Mercer/PIT in 2016 and Galvis/PHI-SD from 2016-18. 
 
Greinke, 35, won his fifth consecutive Gold Glove Award, becoming the third NL pitcher to garner the honor 5 years in a row since the award's inception in 1959, joining Bob Gibson (1965-73) and Greg Maddux (1990-2002, '04-08). Overall, his 5 Gold Gloves are tied for seventh most in Major League history by a pitcher, joining Ron Guidry, Phil Niekro and Kenny Rogers. Greinke is 1 of 5 pitchers in history with 5+ Gold Gloves and All-Star selections, along with Maddux, Niekro, Gibson and Mike Mussina. Greinke has also has won the award in each of his 3 seasons with the D-backs, equaling Goldschmidt (2013, '15, '17) for the most in franchise history. 
 
Greinke, who posted a 1.000 fielding percentage with a Major League-most 57 total chances, was tied for the Major League-lead by a pitcher with 7 defensive runs saved, joining Julio Teheran/ATL and Masahiro Tanaka/NYY. His 57 total chances without an error were the most by a NL pitcher since Adam Wainwright/STL in 2013 (61). Greinke has an active errorless streak of 84 starts (525.0 IP) dating back to May 12, 2016, the fourth longest active streak in the NL, trailing Jon Lester (103), Madison Bumgarner (98) and Patrick Corbin (86).  
 
Ahmed and Greinke will have an opportunity for further recognition with the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award fan vote, which allows fans across the country to vote for the best defender in each league. Voting will end on rawlings.com on Thursday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. Fans can only select 1 player among the 2018 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners to take home the "best of the best" honor.
