Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have acquired catcher Omar Narváez from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Alex Colomé. 
"Omar has quietly developed into one of the tougher outs among catchers in MLB, his contact and on-base skills are welcome additions to our lineup," Dipoto said. "The fact that he is also under club control through 2022 made him a great fit for our club."  
Narváez, 26, set career-highs in nearly every offensive category with the White Sox in 2018, including runs scored (30), doubles (14), home runs (9) and RBI (30). Overall last season he hit .275 (77x280) with 30 runs scored, 14 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs, 30 RBI and 38 walks in 97 games. All 9 of his home runs were hit after June 15, which were 5th-most among American League catchers during that stretch. From June 1-July 31, Narváez, hit .379 (36x95) with 12 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 17 RBI and 7 walks. During this two-month stretch, Narváez led the Majors with a .379 average while also ranking 8th with a .422 on-base percentage (min. 100 PA). The 6-foot, 220-pound, left-handed hitting catcher, ranked T6th in the Majors, 4th in the American League, tossing out 24.1 percent of attempted basestealers (21 CS, 66 SB) last season. 
Narváez was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as a non-drafted free agent on July 4, 2008. He appeared in 4 minor league seasons with the Rays before being acquired by the White Sox in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft on December 12, 2013. He made his Major League debut with the White Sox on July 17, 2016 at the Los Angeles Angels, doubling off Jered Weaver in his first Major League at-bat. Over 3 seasons with the White Sox, Narváez hit .274 (174x634) with 66 runs scored, 28 doubles, 1 triple, 12 home runs, 54 RBI and 90 walks in 221 career games. 
Colomé, 29 (turns 30 on Dec. 31), appeared with both Seattle and Tampa Bay in 2018, combining for a record of 7-5 with 12 saves, 30 holds and a 3.04 ERA (23 ER, 68.0 IP) with 72 strikeouts and 21 walks in 70 relief appearances. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound right-hander limited left-handed batters to a .171 (19x111) average against, compared to a .274 (40x146) average vs. right-handed batters. He was acquired by the Mariners along with Denard Span (of) and cash considerations from the Rays in exchange for Andrew Moore (rhp) and Tommy Romero (rhp) on May 25, 2018. 
In 6 seasons with the Rays (2013-18) and Mariners (2018), Colomé has compiled a career record of 22-18 with 96 saves and a 3.12 ERA (118 ER, 340.2 IP), while striking out 314 and walking 109 in 243 appearances (19 starts). He made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay on May 30, 2013 at Miami. He was originally signed by the Rays as an international free agent on March 20, 2007.
