On Tuesday, October 24, Special Olympics Florida, in collaboration with the Miami Marlins Foundation and ABA Centers of Florida, hosted an action-packed softball skills assessment at loanDepot park, welcoming 250 athletes from across Miami-Dade County. Athletes of all ages and abilities, from 8 to 84 years old, showcased their talents in base running, fielding, throwing, and hitting, under the guidance of Special Olympics staff, volunteers, and former Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez.
The event provided a unique opportunity for athletes to play on a major league field, many for the first time. Each participant rotated through skill stations, where their performance was evaluated to support their development and determine team placements for the upcoming Special Olympics Florida State Fall Classic, scheduled for November 14 at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando.
The atmosphere was electric, with athletes pouring their hearts into every drill, driven by the chance to compete at a professional venue and earn a spot in the state competition.
"They're fully immersing themselves like pro athletes, testing their skills as heroes on the field at loanDepot Park," said the Special Olympics Florida Regional Director.
For many, the event was more than a skills assessment, it was a chance to create lifelong memories. "Today is a special day. It really is a lot of fun," said Gaby Sanchez, whose presence added excitement to the event. Sanchez, a long-time supporter of inclusive sports through his contributions to organizations like the Miracle League, emphasized the joy of watching athletes embrace the game. "These kids are athletes too, and it’s incredible to see the smiles on their faces when they’re performing on the baseball field."
The event underscored the power of community partnerships in fostering inclusion. The Miami Marlins Foundation and ABA Centers of Florida played pivotal roles in making the day a success, creating an environment where athletes could thrive. Volunteers and staff worked tirelessly to ensure each participant felt supported and celebrated.
