Pollock says left groin is fine, just 'cramp'

Injuries mounting for D-backs, including Tomas' back

March 14th, 2017

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- There was a moment when he felt the pain in his left groin muscle Sunday while rounding the bases following a home run that A.J. Pollock got nervous, but the D-backs outfielder said Tuesday that he is was just being overly cautious in leaving the game.
Pollock fractured his elbow two days before the start of the 2016 season, which landed him on the disabled list until late August, but when he did return, it was a left groin injury that sidelined him for the final three weeks of the season.
"I feel great, more of a cramp than anything," Pollock said. "I was probably me being a little more nervous because I did it last year. I think if I didn't have the thing last year, I probably would've stayed in and kind of ran around and it probably would've been fine."
Pollock said that the experience Sunday could wind up being a blessing in disguise.

"I haven't really done anything for it because I just kind of thought it was a thing of the past," Pollock said of the left groin muscle. "But it might have been a nice little warning to say hey, this has got to be part of your routine, to have a couple of exercises for the groin to keep that activated. But I feel pretty confident about everything."
Pollock was not in the lineup Tuesday and likely will miss another couple of days.
Pollock is just one of several D-backs who have been out of action as injuries have begun to mount.
"We've got a number of injured athletes and we're not going to rush through any part of this process to get them on the field as quickly as possible until they're ready to go," manager Torey Lovullo said.
Here's a look at the injury list:
• Outfielder has not played since March 6 due to some discomfort in his lower back.
"Tomas took a couple rounds of BP today," Lovullo said before Tuesday's game. "He'll be down today, he'll be down [Wednesday] and then we'll talk about his work day [Wednesday] and see where he's at for the following day."

• Reliever has yet to throw a bullpen session this spring. The right-hander, who appeared to be a lock for the Opening Day roster, said he will throw a flat-ground bullpen session Wednesday and hopes to get on the mound Friday.
Whether Barrett is ready for Opening Day on April 2 is unknown, but the club does not want to rush him.
• Catcher felt tightness/cramping in his right groin during Monday's Minor League game and could be out the rest of this week.
• Reliever injured his right hamstring while pitching for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. He has felt good playing catch, but has not returned to the mound.
• Reliever (shoulder) has not thrown off a mound since camp opened.
• Catcher Hank Conger (oblique) has not played this spring.
• Outfielder dislocated his finger while sliding headfirst into home plate, and after surgery late last week, it's expected to be another six weeks before he can begin to resume baseball activity.
