OAKLAND --Felix Doubront, who was supposed to be the A's fifth starter, is out for the season and will undergo Tommy John surgery.
Doubront, 28, was pulled from his final Spring Training start April 2 after just one inning with discomfort in his left elbow. He was 1-1 with a save and a 5.82 ERA in six games, including four starts, this spring.
"First and foremost you feel for Felix," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "Felix made his mark here and I think found a home for himself based on what he did for us last year and the versatility that he brings us in any particular role that we put him in. I feel bad for him."
Doubrant's fill-in, left-hander Eric Surkamp, will start Wednesday's series finale against the Angels. He started and received no decision in Friday's win against Seattle, his first Major League start since 2013 last Friday.
The A's rotation was already a little thin, but Melvin feels like they have some options despite Doubront's injury.
"We feel like we can withstand it," Melvin said of Doubrant's injury. "We have some guys, whether it's Jesse Hahn, [Sean] Manaea, certainly Henderson [Alvarez] coming back."
