OAKLAND -- A's outfielder Rajai Davis nearly did everything he could to try and will the A's to a win Wednesday afternoon.
In the A's 7-5, 10-inning loss to the Blue Jays, Davis fell a home run shy of the cycle, and his four hits and four runs scored matched career highs
"He was squaring it up, had good swings, got on base," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He'd been struggling a little bit lately, and he just kind of played that momentum that he had. It's good to see him [do that]."

In doing so, Davis became the first player to score four runs or more in a game in which his team scored five runs or fewer since May 10, 2014, when James Rollins did it for the Phillies. It's also only the fourth time since 1913 that an A's player has accomplished the feat, the most recent being Daric Barton on Aug. 28, 2010.
Davis doubled to lead off the game for the second straight day and scored on a Khris Davis double. He then singled to lead off the third and eventually scored on a fielder's choice.
In the fifth, Davis' high fly to left field was lost in the sun by Blue Jays outfielder Chris Coghlan, who got a glove on the ball but dropped it. Davis raced around the bases and may have had a chance to get an inside-the-park homer but was held at third. He came home when Chad Pinder hit a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 4.

"It was definitely on my mind as I rounded second," Davis said of the chance at an inside-the-parker. "But [given] the time in the game and the number of outs, [it] was risky."
Davis' first three hits all led off an inning, something Davis believes in crucial in setting up the guys in the heart of Oakland's lineup.
"It's good when the leadoff guys get on," Davis said. "With those guys mashing in the middle, it's good to get some guys on and have some runners on for them so they can drive in more runs."
Davis came up twice with a chance to homer and complete the cycle. He struck out in the seventh, and he hit a two-out double to right in the 10th, coming around to score on Matt Joyce's single.

It's the 10th time Davis has had four hits in a game; the last time was July 2, 2016. Then with the Indians, Davis hit for the cycle in Toronto, finishing it off with a single in the ninth. It's also only the third time that Davis has scored four runs in a game. The previous two times were May 17, 2016, when he was with Cleveland, and Aug. 10, 2007, when he was with the Giants.
Davis had been struggling all year, entering Wednesday's game batting .198. But his eighth multi-hit game of the season raised his average up to .216, something he wants to build on from here.
"I'm just hoping that's the beginning of something that will continue," Davis said.
