Vogt doesn't play, but relishes ASG experience

A's catcher may have caught knuckleballer Wright if game went to extras

SAN DIEGO -- Stephen Vogt was simply a spectator in his second All-Star Game, but the A's catcher naturally took to the role with a smile.
American League manager Ned Yost used only two catchers in Tuesday's 4-2 victory over the National League at Petco Park, keeping Vogt on hand for a potential extra-inning pairing with Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright.

No such scene unfolded in the All-Star Game presented by MasterCard. Baltimore closer Zach Britton, teamed with teammate Matt Wieters as his batterymate, pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
"Obviously, you want to get in the game," Vogt said. "That being said, it was really cool for Wieters and Britton to have the ninth inning together."
That Vogt responded with such class was unsurprising. He was appreciative of the experience, even if his name won't appear in the box score like last year, when he caught three innings.

Vogt, the A's lone representative at the Midsummer Classic, had 28 friends and family members in attendance.
"We're having such a good time," he said. "Just being back this year, I'm able to enjoy it better this year. Last year I was kind of like, 'What do I do next?' Now, I know how the day goes now, I know when I'm going to have a ton of time and when I'm not, so I'm just kind of sitting back and relaxing and enjoying the overall experience more."
This year, that included being in the AL dugout when Red Sox great David Ortiz, retiring at season's end, walked off the field to a standing ovation in his final All-Star Game. Ortiz was greeted with a hug from essentially every member of the AL team, Vogt included.

"That was so cool, just getting to experience that and be a part of the team to honor him that way," Vogt said. "It was such a cool day, it really was. It was a great couple days. I had a blast.
"I want to come back every year. Two in a row is great, three in a row would be better. I'm excited to have a couple days off now."
