LHP Morgan to Cubs on Minors deal (source)

January 3rd, 2021

The Cubs have agreed to a Minor League deal with free-agent left-hander that includes a Spring Training invitation, a source told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian on Sunday. Chicago has not confirmed the deal.

Morgan underwent flexor tendon repair surgery in October, and so he isn’t expected to return until well into the 2021 season. The southpaw scuffled to a 5.54 ERA across 17 appearances this year for the Phillies, who selected him in the third round in the 2011 Draft. Morgan chose free agency after Philadelphia outrighted him following the 2020 season.

Morgan, who turns 31 in February, has been significantly better across his six-year career against left-handed hitters (.640 OPS) than righties (.859). His most effective years came from 2017-19, when he compiled a 3.97 ERA and 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.
