CLEVELAND -- With his baseball season complete, it was wedding season for Adam Plutko. The Indians pitcher was in California, standing up in the wedding of one of his friends, expecting the only celebration to be about the couple's big day.
Then, the Indians called.
"I couldn't take the phone call right away, put it through to voicemail," Plutko said. "They had literally just got done saying, 'I do,' and taking pictures and everything."
Plutko's friends will never forget their wedding day, and neither will he. That was when he got the call to the Major Leagues in an unexpected and unique fashion. Having wrapped up his season with Triple-A Columbus, Plutko was not anticipating a trip to the big leagues. Cleveland had already gone through a wave of September promotions, and Plutko had headed home to Dallas.
Things changed for the Tribe on Saturday.
After Carlos Carrasco was hit by a line drive off the bat of Ian Kinsler in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Tigers -- an incident that fractured the pitcher's hand and ended his season -- the Indians wanted another arm. In need of someone capable of handling multiple innings, Cleveland decided on the 24-year-old Plutko, who had a locker at Progressive Field by Sunday and was officially added to the 40-man roster on Tuesday.

Plutko, who is rated as the Tribe's 14th-best prospect by MLBPipeline.com, posted a 3.73 ERA with 130 strikeouts against 46 walks in 161 2/3 innings between Double-A Akron and Columbus this year. He most recently pitched in a game on Sept. 7, but threw a bullpen session after that before heading home for his offseason. Now in Cleveland, Plutko will ramp up his throwing and will be available to pitch in relief on Saturday.
"He won't just be sitting around," Indians manager Terry Franconas aid. "He can throw, get his legs back under him. It's not going to take him very long. And then he'll be available out of the bullpen."
During Plutko's friend's wedding in California, his phone buzzed during the ceremony due to a call from Carter Hawkins, the Indians' director of player development. Plutko did not take the call while on stage or sprint out of the church. He let his friends have their moment and then called Hawkins back when a free moment arrived.
Plutko laughed when asked if he ripped off the tux and ran.
"I had baseball pants with me, so I just threw them on right away, yeah," he joked.
Adding to the moment was the fact that Plutko's wife, parents and plenty of friends were all there when he learned he was getting the call to The Show. This was a little different than a call into the Minor League manager's office.
"It was pretty awesome," Plutko said. "I got to have that moment in person. A lot of times [you make] a phone call [to your family]. For me, it was all in person. It was pretty amazing -- crying, hugging. I'm pretty sure everybody was crying, including myself. 
"It was a lot of fun. It was a moment I'll remember for a long time."
