As Deadline nears, what will AL East teams do?

July 25th, 2019

The American League East appears to be a one-team race, with two others jockeying for an AL Wild Card spot and two others positioned to sell before next week's Trade Deadline.

"The Yankees are going to win the division with ease," a rival AL East executive said. "For them, it's about tuning their roster up for October."

That's not the case for the Rays and Red Sox, who are battling the Indians, Athletics, Angels and Rangers for the two AL Wild Card berths. Tampa Bay and Boston are well within striking distance, yet there have been whispers around the league that either -- or both -- could look at options as buyers and/or sellers between now and July 31.

We spoke with AL East executives about the division's five teams and what we can expect from them during the coming week.

Baltimore Orioles

What they need: "They need everything. They're obviously in a rebuild, so they just need young talent. They have so many needs, they're just trying to collect talent at this point."

Who they might move: " and on the position side, and maybe on the pitching side. Givens is having a down year, so he won't bring back more than a low-level prospect or two. Mancini is probably their biggest asset."

What they can get: "They're focused on the lottery-ticket approach, especially when it comes to bats. Their guys aren't going to get them big-time prospects, so it's just a matter of collecting players and hoping they hit on some of them. They're going to focus on the low-Minors, try to get the guys the GMs don't necessarily care about, because they're four years away -- which is probably the right approach."

Boston Red Sox

What they need: "The bullpen is the obvious answer, but the biggest problem with their team has been the rotation. People talk about the bullpen, but they need a starter just as badly. They've gotten a lot out of what they have in the 'pen, but they just don't have the most talented group. Their offense is set; they'll just be focused on pitching."

Who they might move: "They don't have a ton of wiggle room in terms of payroll, so if they're going to take on salary, they might have to move some, too. I could see them trying to do some reshuffling and being both a buyer and seller. Maybe a guy like gets moved in that type of scenario."

What they can get: "They might look for starters who could potentially work out of the bullpen, too. It would give them protection against a guy like [Andrew] Cashner or even [Rick] Porcello. A proven reliever like could also be on their radar."

New York Yankees

What they need: "Starting pitching. That's really it. They're linked to relievers a lot, so maybe they'll be opportunistic on that front."

Who they might move: " seems to be the most obvious guy here. They don't give up top prospects unless it's for an impact guy, so look at their middling prospects and that's who you'll see get moved. [General manager Brian] Cashman seems to value his top prospects pretty highly."

What they can get: "They've been tied to Toronto a lot, and in particular. If they feel like they need to give up a lot for Stroman, you may as well get Giles on top of that. I could see something like that happening. Toronto traded [J.A.] Happ to them last year, but these guys are controllable for another year, so I don't know if the Blue Jays would deal them both to New York."

Tampa Bay Rays

What they need: "Tampa [Bay] is in a weird spot right now. [The Rays] need a better catcher; is more of a platoon guy with the bat, though he's got some defensive skills. They're so unorthodox with the way they use their pitching staff, but they're always looking for arms; starter, reliever, whatever."

Who they might move: "It's so hard to predict. There are no obvious guys like last year, who they need to move, so it would probably be their second-tier prospects. They're not trading their top five prospects."

What they can get: "They're going to be opportunistic like they always are. I could see them buying and selling. They have a bunch of solid players, and they're good at what they do, but they're so unorthodox. Sometimes it's hard to wrap your head around their team. I could see them acquiring a versatile infielder like , or ."

Toronto Blue Jays

**What they need: "**They're an interesting club, because they have some good, young talent. Starting pitching has really been the issue for them. That should probably be their focus. If I'm in their shoes, though, I'm going to get the best talent I can."

Who they might move: "Marcus Stroman and Ken Giles are their big chips, but they have some other interesting players like , and . , and Freddy Galvis could also be interesting for a team, too."

**What they can get: "**They can probably do better packaging Stroman and Giles together, though they each have a year of control, so they'll probably explore both. They should do pretty well with both guys. Smoak is having a down year, and while Sogard is having a good year, most teams know they're buying high on him. Hudson is an interesting guy with pretty good stuff, so he could bring back a decent return."
