LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers third baseman/left fielder Alex Guerrero, on the disabled list with a left knee injury, will begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga, his first time back in game action since Spring Training.
Since beginning the season on the DL, Guerrero has remained in Arizona to rehab his knee. He will start at third base and hit fourth for the Quakes.
"We'll see how he responds with his health," manager Dave Roberts said. "He's got to get hits, and he's also got to stay healthy."
The start of Guerrero's assignment means the team will soon have to figure out how to fit him into the 25-man roster. Rehabbing position players can stay on a rehab assignment for up to 20 days.
"I want everyone here, but there's only 25 spots," Roberts said. "I don't have to make that decision; that's the beautiful thing about this. I just have to coach these 25 players."
Guerrero has played third base, shortstop, second base and left field in the Minors, but he's only played third base and left field in the Majors, with third base his stronger position. However, those are arguably the Dodgers' deepest positions. Five players on the current 25-man roster have started in left field so far this season, while four have started at third.
Guerrero's bat was hot to start the 2015 season, as he went 11-for-26 with five home runs in April. However, he only had a .585 OPS for the rest of the season and finished with a .233/.261/.434 slash line.
