Cardinals right-hander Alex Reyes was dominant in a rehab start for the Class A Peoria Chiefs on Monday, allowing one hit over five innings with 12 strikeouts and two walks. Reyes made 80 pitches (51 strikes) and hit 100 mph on the radar gun, according to the Chiefs.
The 12 strikeouts were one shy of Reyes' professional high. He fanned 13 in a game for Class A Advanced Palm Beach on June 17, 2015.

Reyes is working his way back from Tommy John surgery in February 2017. He began his rehab assignment last week with 3 1/3 shutout innings for Palm Beach. It marked his first appearance in a game since his last Major League start on Sept. 29, 2016, vs. the Reds in St. Louis.

Reyes, 23, is rated as the Cardinals' top prospect (No. 17 overall), per MLB Pipeline. He broke into the big leagues in 2016 and posted a 1.57 ERA through 12 appearances (five starts) for the Cardinals.
Reyes is expected back in late May or early June. The club is currently without ace Carlos Martinez, who landed on the disabled list last week with a right lat strain, and Adam Wainwright also could be sidelined after elbow issues resurfaced in an abbreviated start Sunday.
