Wood, Bellinger take home NL's May honors

MLB.com

Heading into this season, one thing you could guarantee about the Los Angeles Dodgers was they would have stars. Yet heading into the third month, it's two players who weren't at the forefront on Opening Day who are earning hardware.

Few players made more of an impact on the Dodgers' 19-9 month than starter Alex Wood and outfielder Cody Bellinger. Actually, few players made more of an impact in all the National League -- a fact that earned Wood and Bellinger the league Pitcher of the Month and Rookie of the Month honors on Friday.

Assigned to long relief at the season's outset, Wood sprang himself from that role in dramatic fashion, winning five of his first seven starts before landing on the disabled list Monday. Wood went 5-0 with a 1.27 ERA in May, striking out 41 hitters in 28 1/3 innings.

Bellinger burst onto the scene as a 21-year-old rookie at the beginning of the month. By its end, he'd earned his position as the clear NL Rookie of the Year Award favorite. Bellinger hit nine home runs last month, several of them in dramatic late-inning fashion, while driving in 27 runs in 28 games. Bellinger leads all NL rookies in runs (25), homers, RBIs (29), SLG (.565) and OPS (.887).

Past winners: Pitcher | Rookie

Wood is the first Dodgers pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw to win NL Pitcher of the Month since Zack Greinke in August 2013. Bellinger is the first Dodgers rookie to win Rookie of the Month since Corey Seager in June 2016.
